Description
UK Paragliding School on the Isle of Wight.Welcome to High Adventure - a fully recognised and registered British Paragliding and Hang gliding Association school that is celebrating 27 years of quality Paragliding tuition.
We have been teaching hang-gliding since 1981 and were the first UK hang gliding school to teach paragliding in the late 80s. Many of the teaching techniques adopted by other schools today, were developed by us.
We have a team of 6 dedicated instructors at High Adventure, who teach paragliding to all levels. Each instructor has a wealth of experience to offer new pilots and all are qualified and licensed by the British Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association ("BHPA").
The Isle of Wight is uniquely situated 4 miles from the South Coast but within easy reach of London (11/2 - 2 hours) and the home counties. The narrow strip of water that surrounds the Island acts as a buffer against the fast running tide of mainland hustle and bustle; the pace of life is slower but the flying activity is intense!
Being in the "deep South", the Isle of Wight often escapes the worst effects of low pressure systems so providing a large number of flyable days for paragliding tuition. Our location ensures constant summer sea-breezes which provide smooth flying conditions that are essential for rapid and easy learning of basic paragliding skills. Couple this with access to over a dozen flying sites which cater for all wind directions and the advantages of this lovely island become clear. See our Weather Page for more information.
We provide a collection service from the ferry terminal at Yarmouth on each flyable day.
PARAGLIDING COURSES
Short Courses
The aim of the one or two day course is to get you flying as soon as is safe and practicable! After your arrival at the centre, you will be registered as a trainee pilot with the BHPA, which provides you with temporary membership and third party liability insurance cover. You will then receive a short introductory talk from your Instructor, detailing among other things, safety aspects and the weather conditions for the day. Next, your Group will be taken to the training slopes, where each student is allocated a harness, glider, helmet and radio. Your instructor will then demonstrate the equipment, various safety checks and procedures together with the rudiments of "ground handling", which will enable you to start to master the canopy and to fly it like a kite.
After a couple of hours, you will move to the lower slopes of the hill, where you will undertake some short, low ground skimming flights. As you grow in confidence and ability, we gradually move up the hill and you will then experience the thrill and exhilaration of your first flight! from about 50 feet agl All your flights are undertaken with full supervision and your Instructors are in radio contact with you at all times. The two day course allows you to develop further the skills that you have learned (lots more flying) and hopefully, will convince you that obtaining your Club Pilot rating is your ultimate goal! If you decide to sign up for your Club pilot course within a couple of weeks, we will deduct what you have paid off the full course fee.
Student Pilot
The aim of this course is for you to achieve your student pilot rating, which is a pre-requisite to you obtaining your club pilot's licence. The course allows you to develop those skills outlined in the Introductory course above, but continues to develop you further, by enabling you to undertake more controlled flights, turns and spot landings. Assisted by lectures given by your Instructors, you will obtain an insight into site assessment, weather conditions suitable for flying, the aerodynamics of the wing in flight and basic air law, all of which is necessary information for your safe flying.
Club Pilot
The aim of this course is to achieve your Club Pilot licence which will allow you to join a club and to fly without the supervision of an Instructor... this is where you really start to learn to fly! To qualify for this course, you must have successfully obtained your Student Pilot rating. You will continue to develop your flying skills and control in flight, which will include tasks such as soaring, side landings and top landings.
Student Pilot & Club Pilot
This course is aimed at the converted! If you have already completed a one or two day introductory course and you sign up for the combined course within two weeks, we will deduct the cost of your original course from the combined course fee.
Please note that all of the above courses do not need to be taken "en bloc" and as long as the course is completed over a period of six months, the course can be spread over weekdays and weekends at your convenience. The advantage of signing up for the combined course is that it is cheaper than the split student pilot and club pilot course.
