The Enchanted Manor

Some enchanted evening, you may see a stranger, you may see a stranger across a crowded room?Well, just like the song, that´s what happened when Australian Ric Hilton met Maggie while she was on holiday in his homeland. The magic between them was such that he followed her to the UK where together they have created The Enchanted Manor, a romantic retreat in Niton on the Isle of Wight, that´s just heavenly. A luxury hideaway in a tranquil woodland setting, the rooms brim with the couple´s unique and extravagant style, inspired by the artist Josephine Wall´s paintings of fantasy maidens and magical woodland creatures.

Each of the seven luxury suites has sumptuous and comfortable four-poster beds; you feel you could sleep for 100 years. The fairytale furnishings, opulent wall coverings, swagged fabrics and Venetian glass chandeliers are grand, but the overall ambience of the Manor is homely and relaxing. Maggie and Ric are wonderful hosts, serving you a hearty breakfast each morning in the garden room over-looking the heated outdoor swimming pool, or in your suite if you prefer. Afterwards, wander down through the enchanted woodland to walk the coastline around St Catherine?s Point, Maggie will happily pack you a picnic to take. High tea can be taken in the elegant drawing room, including romantic heart-shaped scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream.

In the evening, why not try one of the great pubs or restaurants on the Island for a few drinks and a delicious meal. But if you prefer the twinkling of fairy lights and a sprinkling of stardust, then wind your way back to the Manor for another restful night of sweet dreams.

The Manor was built in 1838 by the Kirkpatrick family and was known then as Windcliffe Manor. The family originated from Scotland and their history dates back to AD1124, when records showed they were connected to the Royal family. They moved to the Island in 1704 and owned several substantial properties in Niton and the Manor was in the family until 1962 when it then became a hotel. The Kirkpatrick?s enjoyed a very high standard of living, their wealth came from owning a bank on the Island ? they even issued their own bank notes. Many titled and well-known people visited the family. They had over 15 staff and the original servant bells still remain.

The Enchanted Manor was featured on the BBC TV programme, ´Homes Under The Hammer´ on June 18 2007.
