Description

OPEN 14TH MARCH - 31ST OCTOBER 2010 Sundays to Thursdays 11am - 5pm (last admission 4.30pm or dusk if earlier)

Mottistone Manor Garden which is owned by the National Trust, is one of the most peaceful and magical gardens on the Isle of Wight. The garden, with its gentle grassy slopes and terraces afford distant views to the sea and is full of delights and surprises. Surrounding an attractive Elizabethan manor house (not open) and set in an idyllic sheltered valley, the garden boasts colourful borders and an organic vegetable plot overseen by a resident scarecrow.

Mottistone has been chosen by the Trust to trial different plants to see how well they adapt to our changing climate so as well as traditional plants you will fine banana, ginger lilies and Aloe vera to name but a few. The herbaceous borders contain drought resistant plants - in fact nothing is watered at Mottistone except the vegetables in the kitchen garden! The many other surprises at Mottistone Manor Garden include a young olive grove and a traditional tea garden set alongside The Shack - a unique cabin retreat designed as their country drawing office by the architects John Seely (2nd Lord Mottistone) and Paul Paget. Mottistone´s cast of Flowerpot characters enchants visitors of all ages, and there are delightful walks from the garden onto the downs and the Longstone across the adjoining Mottistone Estate.

Mottistone Manor Garden is on the B3399 between Brighstone and Brook.
