Shanklin Chine
Shanklin Chine is part of our national heritage and the very first Isle of Wight tourist attraction. This spectacular scenic gorge is set in sandstone cliffs with waterfalls and a stream which leads down to the beach and includes rare flora and fauna, a Nature Trail and historic features. The Heritage Centre is home to ´The Island - Then and Now´, featuring ´Flora of the Island´ and the new ´Histree Trail Project´, together with PLUTO (Pipe Line Under The Ocean) which carried petrol to the Allied troops in Normandy during WWII.
Also at Shanklin Chine there are local history displays and a memorial to 40 Royal Marine Commandos who trained here for the Dieppe raid of 1942. After dusk, during the main summer months, subtle illuminations create a magical world. At night, Shanklin Chine is transformed into a place of enchantment and mystery using the latest energy saving technology ? the waterfall is a vision. Browse in the gift shop, enjoy a cream tea in the Tea Garden or just sit, relax and take in the view. There is limited wheelchair access and dogs must be on leads.
